Members’ quilts at the Sydney Quilt Show 2022

We loved seeing two Fairholme quilters’ quilts hanging in the Sydney Quilt Show at the weekend. Jenn @pennypoppleton’s ‘Alexandria’ and Stephanie @craftypinkcreates’s ‘Colour Explosion’ were both made during the pandemic and finished in time for this first show in three years. Jenn used a treasured collection of Heather Ross fabrics, and @talesofcloth’s pattern. Stephanie reached for her boldest, most exuberant colours to counteract the mundanity of lockdowns, and ‘crown’ shaped EPP papers, and stitched them together to her own design. Both quilts are English paper pieced and hand quilted.

Sydney Quilt Show 2022

Many congratulations to Quilt NSW on mounting its first ‘real life’ quilt show in the three years since the pandemic began (following forced cancellations of the 2020 and 2021 events), with a new committee, a new venue, and new event planning arrangements - an enormous task, well executed.

Several of us attended over the weekend and enjoyed the excellent quilt displays, the well stocked vendors’ mall and the chance to catch up with other quilters.

Congratulations to Narelle Birchall on winning the Bernina 2022 Best in Show Award for her stunning entirely hand stitched ‘Wine and Roses’ quilt.

The Bernina Best in Australia 2021 quilt was announced at the Show, chosen from all the 2021 State winners: the winner of Tasmania’s Island Quilts 2021, ‘All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go’ made by Katherine (Cat) Jones

Julie’s quilt for a new great-grandchild.

The baby’s Mum chose this one for its quiet calm.

Hilary made this striking graphic quilt by a quilt-as-you-go
method, to great effect.

Janet likes the ‘Colour Me’ design so much she has made four!

143 pink 4” squares make up Jill’s quilt that was a thirtieth
birthday gift for a committed pink lover - it is use already.

The fabric was from her stash, supplemented by some
from Sue  for variety .

 

Nerida’s ‘Dear Jen’

Nerida’s version of Jen Kingwell’s ‘Dear Jen’ uses her much loved mix of prints and colours, making a very appealing quilt. The blocks are hand stitched and it is hand quilted. The pattern is available from Amitie Textiles.

Backpacks, placemats, a banner and a cute pincushion

Quilting often leads to other things …

Susan made backpacks for a little niece and nephew.

Milky left over from a quilt back is very soft and
furry for the teddy bear.

Ocean adventures for this one!

Elaine made placemats using accredited indigenous
prints from Spotlight.

Elaine’s Trefoil Guild made an appliqued and quilted banner
representing their location for her Trefoil Guild,
 combining two interests - quilting and Guiding.

Sharron’s recent UK trip resulted in some lively shopping,
none cuter than her sheepish pincushion.

 

Recent community quilt finishes

A layer cake and some coordinating prints gave Daphne the
opportunity to make a straightforward quilt with interest added
by the variety of block sizes, prints and complimentary
colours. It was made for Daphne’s grandson, but her outgrew
it before it was finished, so Daphne has generously
donated it to our community collection.

Apparently it is possible make these pinwheel block spin two
 ways, even though there is a single template - so
Susan K tells us. She sensibly took a break when that happened.
 It is a fabulous mix of colours and prints.

Elaine G put together a range of beachy prints, and broke 

up the strips with five beach-themed machine 

embroideries (one of Elaine’s favourite sewing techniques).
