After our quilt show in May, lots of new work in progress …

Miriam is making an ‘Unallocated’ quilt, designed by
Michelle McKillop, starting with 5’ squares.

Susan Mac has a ‘stack and slash’ quilt top ready for quilting.

Susan K quickly appreciated how much less complex than it
looks the ‘Batiks in the Wild’ pattern is. Designed by Suzy
Myers, the pattern is available as a .pdf download.

Susan has used some William Morris and other
fabrics from derp in her stash.

Elaine W has used a collection of blue squares for a classic look.

The sashing is a pretty blue print on white.

Susan M took on an unfinished top from Louise’s
declutter, and finished it with some green highlights
from the community stash.

New community quilts

What looks like an applique quilt is actually a
printed panel, quilted by Lynette.

 

‘Unallocated’ designed by Michelle McKillop has become
quite a favorite around here. Hilary’s version started with
squares a little larger than Michelle’s pattern, but it is easy to
re-scale, and remains very scrap friendly.

Two nine patch blocks using only squares and half square
triangles and a striking palette play nicely in Susan’s
recently finished community quilt, quilted by Laura Ujhazy.

Jill made the blocks for this one in 2023 but didn’t like them
sewn together with no separation. Cutting some blocks in
half and adding donated sashing from the community stash
gave some breathing space, and saw the quilt finished.
And created enough blocks for a second quilt
yet to sew themselves together.

New quilts and more

What a brilliant baby quilt! Louise bought the ‘Avalon
Crossroads’ pattern at an Avalon Quilters exhibition,
 knowing she had some fabric that would be a great
start for Marilyn Bell’s design. The hand quilting
adds a perfect finishing touch.

The stripes! The checks! The shot cottons!

Hilary made this doll for a little Sri Lankan friend,
 from Jodie RicRac’s ‘Ginger’ pattern.
Clothes patterns are included.

The coat is felt - making its construction easier, Hilary said.

Ginger’s dog is included in the pattern,
along with his coat (yet to be made).

A single shape makes up this dynamic design. Half rectangle
triangles are trickier to sew than the more common half square
triangles, so Elaine used a specialist ruler to ensure the result
she wanted. The alternate orientation of  the blocks lends great
movement to the design that compliments the vibrant palette.

Elaine machine quilted it herself. She plans to donate
the quilt to a service at Westmead Hospital.

Fabric bird fun

We had a very enjoyable morning on Saturday, making a colourful flock of birds under the excellent guidance of Pat who made the fabric birds you might recall as decorations at our quilt show back in May. These are the ones we saw at quilting on Monday - there are more to come. Thank you for such a fun workshop Pat. 

Three of us were using our very portable Elna TX sewing
machines from the late 70s, all in good working order.

New shares

When quilting gives you LibertyTana lawn scraps, be like
Roslyn and save them to make a very stylish long Boro scarf.
To tame the long narrow piece as she worked on it,  Roslyn
wound each end around a cardboard tube from a roll of cling
wrap, and stored  each of them in its cling wrap box side by side. 

The raw edged scraps were ironed onto a very lightweight
interfacing, and backed with a lightweight lawn, the
layers hand-stitched together Boro style.
What a beautiful way to keep warm this chilly winter!

Susan did a ‘Medallion in a Day’ class with Margaret Sampson
George at 60 Stitches. She did indeed complete the medallion
centre in the class and went home to complete the quilt top over
 a weekend, armed with a little new fabric and done fabulous
suggestions for using some carefully stashed favourites.

The quilt top has responded beautifully to machine quilting
by Jane Rennie (Quilting Finesse). Susan is particularly fond of
the octopus print and the Liberty stripes. 

The backing fabrics is a nod to one of tge recipients
who is an architect,

Another facet finish from Susan - an orphan block
compilation that initially had Susan stumped to construct.
But she is delighted with her new couch quilt,
also quilted by Jane Rennie.

The leftover blocks transform the back of the quilt.

Sharing Julie’s quilt top before it’s finished because her
plan is to have it quilted and despatched to Western Australia,
so that it can then travel to its new owner in Germany
with his Granny.

We did wonder how long Julie has been saving
the delightful Lion King print.

Margot shared a little quilt made some years
ago that she is fond of.

Marilyn was knitting , but her knitting bag (made from
 a kit) was pretty patchwork.
