Recent show and tell

At short notice, Lynette recently  took
herself off to Canberra for the day for a
workshop with Akiko Ike ...
... and this little pouch is one of the things she made !
These pieced sailing boats are perfect for a baby boy quilt, made
by Lyn (not Lynette!) for her rehab physio.  She decided the
navy sashing strips were a bit boring, so machine appliqued
some of the motifs from the border fabric on them.
We had a machine piecing with templates workshop with
Catherine Butterworth  early in 2015. Dawn's top is now
finished, and the high contrast between her fabrics shows the
'curved piecing' illusion well. It will be finished in no time!
We have seen at least three Jolly Stars quilts finished,
but this is a reminder that some of us are lagging a little
in the completely finishing department ...

Quilts of Valour Australia visit and quilt donations

We enjoyed a visit from Sue and Stan fromthe NSW branch of  Quilts of Valour Australia recently. QOV makes quilts for soldiers / veterans wounded or suffering the effects of war and immediate families of fallen soldiers.

They brought some  QOV quilts to show us, and we donated two quilts from our community collection.

Sue with one of the quilts she brought alone, being admired by Julie
Lynette finished a disappearing four-patch quilt just in time to
donate to the QOV team, and Helen (our Convenor) presented
another one from our community collection
Susan made the second donation quilt, a disappearing nine-patch.

Last show and tell for September

What a lovely collection of quilts to finish up September - click on an image for a larger view:

Julie outlined all the clothing folds in this panel
with machine stitching, and heavily embroidered
the gingko leaves with gold metallic thread. A stamp
on the back says the woman depicted is 'Barbara'.
Linda P's class sample for her upcoming beginners'
applique class at Hobby Sew at Top Ryde. She has used
the technique described here for cutting backing economically
several times, including in this quilt, and she is

completely sold on it.
Nerida's niece will love this beautiful quilt for her 18th -
lots of gorgeous prints. Centre blocks designed by Katy Jones
@imagingermonkey editor of Quilt Now magazine (UK) .
And it's big. Hand quilting coming up.
Improv blocks, referencing an urban look have been on Pat's mind.
She designed the blocks herself, making adjustments as she went
along, with input from images online and in print and cloth. Isn't
it spectacular? So much to see - you could look at it for hours.
Quilting decisions must be made.
To mark turning 80, Robin W decided to learn a new, challenging
hand piecing technique - the Y seam. She is now an expert - as she is
with putting colours together, from her extensive stash of
Kaffe Fassett fabrics.
Sue B has been busy again, this time working colour and
design magic with jelly rolls! It's big too.

Community quilts

Very few weeks go by that someone doesn't hand over a quilt for our community collection. Here are the most recent beauties ...

The block centres are small nine patches
Julie took on the challenge of piecing a quilt from
donated sheeting cottons in pretty florals.
Elaine W used some Beatrix Potter prints, complemented small
scale prints and a community stash fabric border for this quilt.
A glimpse of their backing fabrics.
