Multi-talents!

Quilting objects for purposes other than warmth, embroidery, crochet and knitting are all practised alongside our making of quilts for warmth … some of us even sew garments!

Robin bought this vibrant hand dyed merino wool in rural,
NSW recently, to knit up into a hat ora scarf, maybe both …

… like this one she made last year. Lynette bought the buttons
in Berry when she visited for their recent quilt show.

Lyn found an almost finished crocheted shawl made by
an aunt many years ago, and has added the stitches to
complete the tartan pattern.

Janice used 1/2 hexagons backed with felt to make
clever thread keepers for her embroidery threads.

Robyn made some beautifully warm beanies last year
that were snapped up from our craft stall, so we were
delighted when she brought in some more for the
coming winter. They didn’t all make into the craft stall stock.

Janice’s new baby granddaughter has the beginnings
of a fine wardrobe of knitwear.

Louise made a densely embroidered heart,
framed on black linen for a friend.

Daphne has a collection of patterns for small pouches and
purses. These little ones open out into handy box shape.

More work coming along nicely

Since we have been back to face to face meetings, we are enjoying seeing all the isolation projects making progress, and new ones started …

Hilary’s rainbow

‘Wensleydale’, from Jen Kingwell’s book ‘Quilt Recipes’
is a very popular  design. Miriam’s scrappy version
has a large scale Kathy Dougherty bird print border.

Jill made Wensleydale in mostly pink and purples
at the request of a six year old.

Big bright scrappy twisted hexagons made by Jill …

.. has a large scale floral print border designed by
Anna Maria Horner

Daphne married large print squares with bands
 of foundation paper piecing.

‘Flowering Gum’, from the Australian Floral Mandala
series designed by Sonya Else.

Susan is well advanced on machine stitched raw-edge
appliqué using fabric from her stash.

Community quilt finishes

Elaine W has generously made a lot of community quilts
during the pandemic - this is the second one
using a rail fence variation.

Another of Elaine W’s community quilts, scrappy quarter
log cabins.  It really came ‘together’ with  the dark floral
 setting triangles.

Sue delved into her stash, past her favourite blues to the
purples and pinky-purples, and cut 3” squares for an
on-point checkerboard.
The counterpanes are a tiny spot on white.

There was a bit of purple left, providing a rich pieced back.

Julie made good use of a collection of
fabrics left over from earlier quilts …

… and still had enough left over for another small one.

A parade of ‘Crooked Courthouse Steps’

About a year ago, Nerida ran a workshop with us on categorising and using a mix of low volume fabrics in scrappy quilts, using Bonnie Hunter’s ‘Crooked Courthouse Steps’ to demonstrate. It was a great success, and generated a lot of ongoing interest, judging by the number of quilts we have made using the block since.

Nerida’s (third?) Crooked Courthouse Steps community quilt.
The border is an Amy Butler print from some years ago.

Nerida has a wide ranging stash of modern prints,
 including low volumes.

The beautiful  backing of Nerida’s quilt.

Dawn made her pretty ‘many purples’ version as a gift for
a friend. It was quilted by Laura.

Julie and Jill both made a pile of blocks after the work
-shop, that are being put together into two community quilts
with some from each pile. The second one is now underway.
