Art Quilts in Focus: Quilt NSW exhibition, Concord

From the Quilt NSW July news update:
We are delighted to announce that QuiltNSW will have an exhibition Art Quilts in Focus at the Embroiderer's Guild Gallery 76 during the month of August. The exhibition comprises a selection of works from the Sydney Quilt Show 2019 showcasing the art of the quilt in a gallery setting. The Embroiderers' Guild has generously provided this space and we are showcasing art quilts as a reminder of next year's The New Quilt.

We invite all members to the Exhibition opening to be held at 2.30 pm, Saturday 3 August. RSVP online by 12 noon Wednesday 31 July.

Community quilts

There was a definite 'touch of red' theme in the quilts being worked on at our June community sewing day ...

Dawn is getting ready for another Australian botanical themed quilt

Elaine B was refining the layout for a child's qult

Elaine W is making pretty cobblestone blocks

Helen whipped up a quilt of many half-square triangles ...
and was pleased to find a little more of a cute red print
with white piglets in the community stash for the next one.

Jill sewed strips together for a 'In a Whirl' quilt designed by
Miriam, while Janet pressed and cut, and Miriam advised.

Sue C is putting together a 'Super Stars' quilt, also designed by
Miriam, with a red cross hatch print background. The stars are
multicoloured small scale prints on white backgrounds.

Jill cut batting for the disappearing nine-patch she made, that
Laura has generously offered to quilt on her long arm machine.

The finished quilts have recently been added to the community collection for distribution ...

Elaine G made this log cabin variation quilt from donated
fabrics. She added one coordinating fabric from her stash
to make up the block numbers. It is large enough to be a
cosy bed quilt for one of the nursing homes we donate to.

Eight of these blocks were donated, and Elaine W
made one to complete a set of nine.

Continuum: extraTexture exhibition, Balmain

extraTexture is a group of 5 mixed media and textile artists based in Sydney, who are 'passionate about expressing our love of colour, form and texture in our primarily fibre based work. This year our exhibition has the theme Continuum which the dictionary defines as a sequence, something that keeps on going changing slowly over time. Our group work is one interpretation of the theme which reflects the highs and lows of life.'

Show and tell

Helen is using a project folder made with a vintage
embroidery cover ...

... to keep her growing collection of large, English paper
pieced and fussy-cut hexagons organised.

Julie's quilt (for herself) is made from a Michele Hill
pattern and fabrics - an initial glitch with the block assembly
has been overcome! Each block is machine appliqued.

Jill's 'Pickled Fish' quilt, made from Chris Jurd's
pattern is finished, and is ready to go on her own bed.

Julie made this pretty pink quilt for the first
grandchild of the surgeon who treated her during
a serious illness.

Marilyn O's EPP quilt is evolving in Margaret
Sampson George classes. It started as a star, but has
changed shape as rows have been added. The pattern
so far has no name.

A few more from Sydney Quilt Show 2019. yesterday ...

The hoops, made by Quilt NSW members are a lovely
welcome to the Quilt Show floor.

We had a group member table yesterday, organised by
Helen and setup by Louise, Miriam, Pat and Helen.
Thank you to all of the members who helped out
during the day, and everyone who stopped by.

Louise and Sue C caught up with Sue H from Dubbo.

In addition to some of our quilts, Pat brought in her fabulous
fabric birds, on the right here - they needed a home,
 so naturally, she made them a tree!
We will see them again ...

The Tresillian Centenary Quilt, designed and coordinated
by Cath Babbage and Julie Kennedy was hung hung high
in the Quilt NSW area of the show floor.
Some of our members contributed blocks and applique leaves.
It is so large that the hanger and quilt were raised
by a cherry picker to set it up.

And late this afternoon, it was all over for another year, and the quilts came down.

Our quilts are in there somewhere!

Our quilts at Sydney Quilt Show 2019

Quilts made by our members that are hanging in the Sydney Quilt Show this week, include two entered in the group category, both made from our forty 2018 Quilt Show challenge blocks.

The 2018 challenge blocks have provided great value -  as a group activity, as a block display at our 2018 quilt show, as an entry into the 2019 Sydney Quilt Show, as our major raffle prize for 2020 raising funds for a local not-for-profit, and as a beautiful quilt for the winner.

The second quilt will also be used as a fundraiser for a community organisation.  And we have one more plan for using them to raise funds, to be revealed at next year's Fairholme Quilt Show. These quilts have worked hard, for great benefit!

Fairholme will have the group members' table in the Quilt NSW area of the show floor on Saturday 22 June - come and see a few of our quilts, talk to us, and you can also buy tickets in our 2020 raffle. We'd love to see you there.

'All That Jazz' will be our raffle quilt for our 2020 Quilt Show.
 Both quilts were put together by Val and Roslyn, and 
machine quilted by Yvette.

'Razzamattazz' is the second quilt made from the 2018 
challenge blocks, hanging at Sydney Quilt Show this week.

The display label reads:  My son saw the Pickled Fish blocks
I made for another quilt, and asked for a "Pickled Shark" quilt.
He chose the layout and the colours to reflect his favourite
NRL teams. The quilting design is called 'Sails' but could
be interpreted as shark fins.

Sydney Quilt Show 2019 - this week!

The 2019 Sydney Quilt Show opens tomorrow, Wednesday 19 June at the International Convention centre at Darling Harbour, and runs until Sunday 23 June.

The Quilt Show includes a display of 400 members' quilt, and a number of smaller exhibitions, such as two by multi-award winning members, who will give floor talks each day:

Nature's Art at the Palm House

Regular readers of this blog will be familiar with Yvette Aoude's work as a quilter and as a long-arm quilter for others. From today, Monday 17 June until 28 June, you can see another aspect of her talent in the exhibition  'Nature's Art' where Yvette is one of four featured artists. The Palm House at the Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney is a stunning venue, in the heart of the city.

Around the meeting table ...

There is always quite a bit to see just by checking out what people are currently working on, in addition to what they bring for 'show and tell'. What is more difficult to document is the collaboration and co-operaton that often flies just under the group radar as people help each other with suggestions, information, and assistance. Last Monday was a public holiday, so perhaps we'll see great strides made over the last fortnight at tomorrow's meeting. Here are some observation from a couple of weeks ago ...

Another piece of a vintage 'cutter quilt' has made its way into
Helen's collection - worn from use, but lovely to contemplate.

There is always plenty of hexagon action - so portable!
These might be Julie's?

Marilyn's tiny clam shell border for her Oakhampton
quilt continue to grow.

We couldn't help but notice that several SewMiriam zip bags
were in regular use ... we know there are more!

This one is Miriam's own.

Gorgeous greens

Daphne's colourful cat panel is distinctive

Sue C has sewn nearly enough carefully curated 1 1/2" hexagons
for her granddaughter's quilt. She'll be checking out border options
at her next Margaret Sampson George class at Cottage Quilt Works.
