A textile book, from a book

Helen is exploring an unusual multimedia project that is proving both enjoyable and intriguing, and quite meditative. She’s making a textile book from ordinary, old discarded hard backed books.

Helen brought in the pages in progress,
and explained the process.

The coloured cloth is the from the deconstructed covers,
usually linen, from which the glue has been removed
by soaking in warm water.

The cloth is then soft and ready to be stitched over batting
and backing, forming individual ‘pages’. Embellishments
include oddments of lace and embroidery,
a shard of sheet music ….

… scraps of fabric and a couched piece of cord …

… stitching, fragments of pages from the original book …

… embroidery and a message from the book …

… a little stitching, or a lot. The soft faded colours are
reminiscent of books you might recall from older family
members’ book collections.

Quilt finishes

All the Liberty 2” hexagons in Hilary’s sensationally
soft, hand stitched quilt.

Many prints, few of them repeated.

Finished with a beautiful Liberty landscape print backing,
Liberty binding and hand quilting.

What a fun quilt this one must have been to make!
Rae’s version of Wendy Williams’s ‘Colour My World’ design.

How clever are the circular road borders?

And Rae found just the right backing - islands of houses.

A lovely mix of colours and prints in a very sweet little
quilt made by Louise for a friend’s new grand baby…

… and quilted by Janet.

Finished!

Elaine B was captivated by the ‘Unallocated’ quilt made
by Nerida. The design is by Michelle McKillop.
Elaine made her very colourful version in just
a few weeks, finishing it just in time to give to her
granddaughter visiting from overseas.

The blocks are 3 1/2 inches! Long arm quilted by Janet.

Its beautiful large scale Heather Bailey print backing is an
excellent foil to the tiny blocks and multiple
 prints on the front.

Soft and drapery, Marg V’s blue beauty is hand pieced…

… hand quilted …

… and backed with a complimentary/gently
contrasting French General print.

English paper pieced 8” Twisted Hexagons made from
mostly stashed fabric and scraps by Jill.

Hand quilted. The border is a popular Anna Maria Horner print.

New community quilt finishes

Noelle made her first version of this gorgeous quilt for
her granddaughter, but there were some blocks left over …
so a few more joined them to become a community quilt.
Note the pieced border corners and the very
carefully chosen border print.

Quilted by Laura.

During Covid lockdowns Robin used her stash to make
a rainbow of log cabin blocks, that she has quilted in
the calm after a recent house move.

Elaine G adapted a design to appeal to the mechanically
minded. The gear wheels are appliqued with hand
stitched buttonhole stitch.

Susan dived into the community stash for her half square
triangles, borders, background and backing fabrics

Quilted by Laura, bound by Lynette.

A generous donation to our community stash included a
collection of saturated red and yellow prints that Jill made
into a modern improv quilt with simple piecing.
