The Fashon and Textile Museum, London

Miriam recently passed on the link to the Chintz exhibition coming up at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London. Of course this led to further online exploration of this delightful and very interesting institution - so much of interest to anyone interested in textiles, how they are made, how they have been used in fashion (look back at posts about past exhibitions for glimpses into your own fashion past!), and in these pandemic times, several options for exploring exhibitions and talks online.

The Fashion and Textile Museum in London has scheduled the exhibition 'Chintz - Cotton in Bloom' from March - August 2021. This link features some highlights of the exhibition. Textile lovers should enjoy it.

Thank you Miriam for taking us down this lovely online rabbit-hole!

Virtual meeting, virtual show and tell

We're continuing to meet by Zoom for the time being, but anticipate that face to face meetings will be resumed soon. This week we were very happy to be in our cool homes as the temperature climbed into the high 30s during a five day heat wave ...

Robyn L leads with the first finish for 2021, although she says
she has been working on it spasmodically 'for some time'. There
is a lot of hand sewing here - piecing, embroidery and
quilting, and a beautiful colour palette.

So much to look at in the individual blocks ...

... and the brilliant choice of background fabric that has
subtle hints of all the featured colours.

Jo-Ann has recently moved house. In the
unpacking she found this finished top that she had
forgotten about, but was very pleased to find.
Unusual, restful colours, and just enough contrast.

Julie is hand-piecing 110 small four patches, with 1”
cornerstones for her ‘Bubble and Squeak” scrappy quilt.
It’s going faster than she anticipated, so she is
thinking about what she might do next, too!

There is quite a bit of hexagon making and sewing in
progress - these are Hilary's scrappy 1" hexies.
Great for comfortable, cool summer sewing.

At least the heat wave could be taken advantage of for quilt
washing and drying, as Sue did!

New year, new quilts, new progress

We thought we could be back to face to face meetings by this week, but the pandemic has other plans, so we are zooming, and keeping in touch by other means until restrictions can be eased.

Stephanie did a big push to finish projects at the end of last
year, and her plan for new things to work on in 2021 has
started well, with a 'not too pink' 'trip around the world'
of tiny squares.

Stephanie has also joined  an Instagram event, the
#focuscuttingsewalong, aiming to complete two themed
blocks each week. This and the next are her week 1 blocks.

Staphanie's week 2 blocks for the #focuscuttingsewalong

Linda has also joined the #focuscuttingsewalong, hoping
to keep up now that she is fully retired. Her first two blocks
here and below.

Jill has made (and trimmed!) all the blocks for a square
version of a free pattern from @kitchentablequilting for
the popular 'Plaidish Quilt' for the community collection.

Jill pieced a baby sized 'SuperStars' quilt, designed by
Miriam, and just then, along came news of a new great nephew
expected to arrive between Christmas and new year.
So she posted the top down the coast to her sister for
hand-quilting, who then posted it up the coast to their
niece to celebrate beautiful baby Henry's birth just into
the new year. He' already taken it to the park, and uses
it every day, which his great-aunts liked to hear.

Recent finishes and current projects

How did you go with finishing things off in 2020? Have you started a new quilt for the new year? Our first meeting for the year will be on Zoom next week, so we will expect quite a catch-up. Here are some borrowed from Instagram until then ...

We don't often have photos of quilts with cows, so Miriam's
version of Brigitte Giblin's 'Bloom Hill Quilt' getting approval
from the cows, is very welcome. The fabrics are 1930's feed
sacks. You can see close-ups of the individual blocks on
Miriam's Instagram account @sewmiriam, as she posts
one on the first of each month as her calendar blocks.

Stephanie made a push to finish off a number of quilts
by the end of 2020, including her Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt,
'Grand Illusion', her oldest unfinished project,
started in 2014-2015.

It made a lovely quilt swirl!

Another late 2020 finish by Stephanie was this quilt-as-you-go
hexagon collection, made to Raspberry Spool's pattern, for
donation to the Mothers' Union Sydney Shop.

Sue C has been machine quilting a community
quilt started late last year ...

And finishing a very sharp edge on a hand-quilted one for
herself, started many years ago. This technique is more time-
consuming, but eliminates the need for binding
and gives a very clean edge.

Nerida is sewing along with @zanymouse and
@stephjacobsondesigns and friends as they finish their More
Modern HST quilts. She's thinking long bars, Amish
style setting with some resting space between.
It will be beautiful.

Pat is very happy with her fabric roses.

New Year 2021
