Finished quilts

Jill (‘I’m never making a hexagon quilt’) made the first few
of these 1” hexagons in 2013, then it was a slow burn till this
month, when it was hand quilted and bound.

Helen is not afraid of hexagons, or fussy cutting.
An heirloom, inspired by a Karen Cunningham quilt.
Machine quilted by Cathie at Lakeside Quulting.

The background is a shirting fabric with a
tiny graphic print in green.

Julie’s May Gibbs quilt for the future great
grandchildren collection.

More gum nut babies on the back.

Dawn’s latest ‘Crooked Courthouse Steps’
- the scraps are not running out yet.

Susan made this quilt from a very appealing colour palette
of fabrics from her stash. It was greatly admired by a
close friend who now owns it.

Some left over pieces break up the backing.

Bilbies by @isabella.golightly

Our members really are multi-talented. Susan @isabella.golightly makes bilbies - small, medium and large. She designed her own pattern, and shares it for a small fee, with proceeds donated to the Save the Bilby Fund @savethebilbyfund in Charleville, Queensland. You can make one (or more!) to donate to the Save the Bilby Fund and they will sell them in their shop. Susan can even supply those limid bilby eyes.

The biggest and littlest bilby

Middle sized bilby

Just a small selection of bilby eyes …

And in case you think Susan only makes bilbies (and quilts!), here are her most recent ‘Zorses’, made to Jodie RicRac’s pattern. Jodie suggested the addition of the horn to make one a ‘Zunicorn’ …

‘Bright Beginnings’

We added value to a recent sewing day by offering a workshop on paper foundation piecing - thank you to Daphne for teaching and updating us, Marg didn’t need to take lessons, but she certainly added to the day by bringing along her very first (!) foundation pieced quilt, ‘Bright Beginnings’, made in 2009. Most of us have started with a block or two of much simpler designs, and are still amazed that it works! Thanks for sharing your stunning workmanship Marg.

May - June events

76 Queen Street, Concord West

Tara Glastonbury invited a group of Australian artists to engage in a quilt dialog with an international artist they first connected with online. Each pair then developed an approach ‘in conversation’ – exchanging materials, celebrating a shared love, building on similarities in style, or meeting in person to create together.
This exhibition is the result of these conversations and sees some of the biggest names in modern quilting exhibiting here for the first time, alongside their Australian counterparts.’

Workshop/sewing day

Our recent sewing day included a workshop with Daphne, who refreshed our foundation paper skills, in which she is highly skilled, some sit and sew, and a sort through a donation to our community fabric stash.

One of Daphne’s class samples

Pat has done foundation piecing before, but finds it a challenge
each time she starts a new project. It looks like
she’s mastered it for now.

While Noelle is already an accomplished foundation piecer,
she used the  day as an opportunity to make corner blocks to
compliment the large centre block she made many years ago
as part of a Tuesday evening group challenge.

She had saved her fabrics and made all four blocks over the
weekend, helped by a cold wet Sunday keeping her indoors.

Elaine B made good progress with her block.

Sharron was a novice foundation piecer, and was
astonished to see her perfect points emerge!

Susan Mack has done this before, and does it well …
… and she’s quick!

It was not mandatory, but it was good of Janice
and Miriam to dress to match their sewing.

Recent finishes

Julie used a collection of cool blue/green/grey fabrics left over
from a number of quilts to make this beautifully
calm gift for a Cousin Germany.

The fabrics have enough tonal contrast to create interest while
they are very complimentary in colour. The cream sashing fabric
was also left over from a previous quilt.
Julie quilted it herself, with a serpentine machine stitch.

Zen Chic designed ‘Spotted Geese’, made by Jo-Ann in a
smart modern palette, a gift for a modern young relative.

Quilted by Laura in Jo’s favourite modern quilting
design, suggestive of  gently swirling air currents.

Some of Stephanie’s goals for 2023 are to use up her
fabric scraps and to finish projects. This colourful
quilt is helping her out with both.

Elaine W made a quilt for her nephew using Japanese
fabrics that was much admired by one of her brothers.
He asked her to make one for him as well.

That second quilt is finished, and will be handed over
this week. There are two more brothers - two more quilts?

Sashiko jacket

Jenny K stitched a series of Sashiko panels, with no particular final use in mind … until she hit upon the idea of a Sashiko jacket, that she kindly modelled for us.
