The Margaret Oppen Prize was initiated in the 1970s to foster excellence in original embroidery design and technique. Margaret Oppen, one of the founders of the Embroiderers' Guild NSW, was a driving force in promoting modern approaches to embroidery. 2024 quilt show
Our 2024 raffle quilt is made with members’ challenge blocks from a 2020 challenge in preparation for the show we had scheduled for early April that year. You can guess what happened to those plans!
We each made a block featuring black and white fabric and a single solid colour fabric allocated to us individually. The block design and stitching method were our own choice. The sashing is pieced from all of the solid fabrics. The quilt was put together by Roslyn and Val, and expertly quilted by Yvette Aoude.
Tickets will be released in the New Year, and the raffle will be drawn on 19 May 2024 at the close of the show. We hope you can join us then!

In progress …
There’s always so much more going on than we can see just from our finished projects. We like to see what everyone else is working on, share ideas, and help each other solve problems. We might be working on some of these (or not) over the summer break).

Recent community quilts

| Team effort: Noelle made these blocks and stitched them into the quilt top using a roll of batik strips from her own stash and a cream fabric from Lynette’s. The top was quilted by Janet, and Jill sewed the binding from Noelle’s strips. |

| Louise is finding some slow burning works in progress as she declutters at home. She donated this completed top to the community collection, where it was quilted and bound by Janet. |

21st birthday quilt for a granddaughter
Robyn is making quilts for her grandchildren as they turn 21, each of them personalised according the tastes and interests of the grandchildren. Her latest 21st quilt was for her granddaughter Melissa, made in her favourite colours, particularly mauve, and with elements of the art nouveau design style that she loves. Melissa knew the quilt was being made, and chose not to see it until her birthday, when she enjoyed the full reveal - one very happy young woman and a delighted grandmother.

Two improv quilts made by Nerida
2023 is Nerida’s third year participating in the Instagram based #30daysofimprovqal run during August by Shannon Fraser (Shannon Fraser Designs) and Amanda Burton (Broadcloth Studio).

| For this year’s quilt Nerida chose a rainbow colour palette, and made four improv blocks in each of her six colours. |
 |
| Block prompts were emailed for each week, along with suggestions for how to use the prompts for five blocks. The weekly prompts were stripes, L shapes, triangles, curves. |
 |
| 5” blocks were suggested, but participants were free to choose their own size. |
 |
| The turquoise blocks didn’t work on the quilt’s front so Nerida made them a feature on the back. |
