A generous and beautiful addition to our community fabric sta

At last year’s Sydney Quilt Show we won first prize for our quilt A Map of Memories and Imagination in the Group category. Fourteen of us contributed to the quilt, so we decided to use the prize package for further group projects. The prize was in two parts, both donated by sponsors: batting from Mini Jumbuck that has been used in our raffle quilt for our own quilt show in May this year, and a $300 voucher from quilt shop Down Patchwork Lane in Penrith.

This week Hilary and Jill took on the task of visiting the delightful Penrith shop and choosing fabric - tough work, but someone had to do it! We were warmly welcomed by Gail, and had no trouble finding fabric we loved for the community stash. We chose half to one meter cuts of a selection of low volumes, and some brighter colours that will appeal to children. When we told Gail that we were planning to use much of the fabric for children’s quilts she generously donated an extra bundle of five Alexander Henry prints.

The shop is packed with high quality fabric, obviously chosen by experienced and enthusiastic quilters. We could hear a happy class happening in the next room (Gail and Tamara run a full program of classes most days), and the quilts decorating the walls were an excellent reflection of the fabrics on offer and the kits and patterns available. Look at the Down Patchwork Lane website to see all of their services. And if you are visiting the Blue Mountains Quilt Show next weekend (17 - 19 April), visit the Down Patchwork Lane stall, say hello from us, and support a local business.

For new visitors to the shop, it is easy to find in an arcade in one of Penrith’s main streets, there is a parking area directly opposite, it’s also not far from the train station, and Gail will direct to an excellent cafe nearby.

Many thanks to Gail and Tamara for your generous prize donation, and for an excellent fabric shopping experience.

Introducing our 2026 Quilt Show vendors: The Makers Stash

Quilt shows are a wonderful opportunity to meet and shop with online shops, and of course to see their stock in real life. We are delighted that The Makers Stash will be one of three vendors at our 2026 Quilt Show on 16 - 17 May:

Leela Gillett,  also known as Miss Leelais the maker and designer behind The Maker’s Stash, a boutique patchwork business devoted to the gentle crafts of English paper piecing and slow stitching. Based in the Blue Mountains, Leela has been stitching for over 20 years and designs patterns, paper templates and curated fabric collections that celebrate mindful, hand-stitched creativity. Through her shop, tutorials and online community, she loves sharing the joy of slow stitching and encouraging makers to embrace beautiful scraps, traditional techniques and the simple pleasure of creating something by hand.

She will be bringing curated fabric bundles, vintage sheet bundles, fabric packs, slow stitching packs, vintage linens, a small selection of EPP paper templates, threads and notions as well as my patterns and kits to the show.

You can preview how beautiful The Makers Stash range of fabrics and other products is on the website, and on Facebook and Instagram. If you love English paper piecing, you will find much to love, and if you are a beginner, lots of encouragement.

Anita's Arrowhead quilt pattern

We did a little internet digging for a pattern for Denise's quilt (posted in February), since the one that she used no longer seems to be available.

The same block, at a different size makes up Anita's Arrowhead, for which there is a free downloadable .pdf pattern here, via Quiltmaker, from 2010.

This version was designed by Anita Grossman Solomon for a 51”x 59.5” throw sized quilt - go to the 'gallery' tab at Make It Simpler for photos of other versions.

You can also find Anita Grossman Solomon on Instagram and on Facebook, and as a columnist for Craftsy.

New website for Quiltsmith

Quiltsmith, one of our favourite quilt shops (in Annandale), has launched its new, improved website, and it is fabulous.

Fabrics and other products available online are arranged into a series of online 'shops', with additional tabs for classes, events, newsletters and administrative functions. It is very attractive, and easy to navigate. The regular class lists are very clear and detailed. One-off workshops are listed under 'events'.

You can also follow Quiltsmith on Instagram @aussiequiltsmith

You might like to check it out over this long weekend.

Tim Latimer includes many photos of the quilt tops he collects, the processes he uses to complete them, and the thinking behind his choices -  make a tea or coffee and relax as you watch someone else work wonders.  He says ...
I collect vintage and antique quilt tops and finish them. My goal is to preserve the fine art of hand quilting.

The Tentmakers of Chareh El Khiamiah

You might have seen the traditional applique work done by tentmakers in Cairo, either on Jenny Bowker's blog, or increasingly at quilting exhibitions. The Tentmakers of Chareh El Khiamiah website was launched just yesterday, primarily to promote the production of a documentary on these talented and fascinating artisans.

The journey starts in a run down, noisy, dusty ancient souk, or market, in Old Islamic Cairo. It examines the recent changes which have had to be made in a street of exclusively male stitchers, textile workers, practicing a 900 year old tradition in almost the exact same manner as it was plied centuries ago.
A collection of their work is currently being shipped to the US for exhibition and sale at various American Quilt Society events throughout 2013.

The Facebook page for the film, is another way to follow its progress, and to see regular posts of photos of the street in Old Cairo, and the breathtakingly beautiful work produced there.

Alicia Merrett, UK quilt artist

Alicia Merrett's wonderful, colourful contemporary art quilts look fabulous online - imagine how good it would be to see them 'in the cloth'.  She is well represented in exhibitions in the UK, and across Europe, so if you are travelling there, that would be something to add to your itinerary.

Her website includes extensive galleries of her early and recent work, listings for classes, workshops and exhibitions, and you will find more on her blog, appropriately named Colour and Light.

One to book mark for a few free moments over the holidays, perhaps?
