Introducing our 2026 Quilt Show vendors: Fabric Garden

We are very pleased to have three local vendors attending our 2026 Quilt Show on 16 and 17 May:

Fabric Garden specialises in modern quilting fabric, keeping up with latest releases, notions, threads, patterns, kits, and a range of crochets and knitting yarns and notions. Also on offer is a wide range of classes, including for beginner quilters, children, and teens. Sue teaches herself and invites guest teachers throughout the year.

This month Fabric Garden is hosting a two day Laura Hein Collage quilting workshop with accredited teacher Maru Sato, on 28 and 29 March. Details and bookings here on the Fabric Garden website.

You will be able to see our raffle quilt, ‘Bespoked’ hanging at Fabric Garden later this month, and to buy raffle tickets there.

We will introduce our other two vendors The Makers Stash and 60 Stitches in future posts.

Fabric bird fun

We had a very enjoyable morning on Saturday, making a colourful flock of birds under the excellent guidance of Pat who made the fabric birds you might recall as decorations at our quilt show back in May. These are the ones we saw at quilting on Monday - there are more to come. Thank you for such a fun workshop Pat.

machines from the late 70s, all in good working order.

All the 2019 'SuperStars'

Photos of our 'SuperStars' quilts made following a workshop with designer Miriam Jones (@sewmiriam) have been appearing in our posts for several months - here is a summary of progress made so far with this very popular new design ...

Miriam a great teacher and communicator,
so it was always going to go well.
Thanks to Nerida for organising and staging
such a lovely and productive day.

Sue pattern tested for Miriam, so we knew she had
enjoyed making the quilt, and her version was
an excellent example.

Roslyn made a very cute test block
- a 2 1/2" panel for a tiny pouch.

The success of the workshop can be partly measured by the numbers of
'SuperStars' quilts that are either finished, or well on the way to being
finished. You can see larger photos of all of them by following this link
through our archives. We know that at least three others are in earlier
stages of preparation, so we'll be sharing them through 2020 as well.

Miriam's Superstar quilt design is available both as a pattern to purchase, and as a project in the Quiltmania magazine, Issue #134.

Adrienne delved into her extensive stash of Japanese prints ...

... and set them in a subtle background of mushroom

Louise has used both high and low contrast fabrics, a deep
teal cross hatch background and a riot of floral brights to great
effect in her ‘SuperStars’ quilt top. 

Quilting over the summer holidays, Louise?

Dawn made a large version with a rich green textured
background ...

... and a smaller version for a child, now ready for
quilting by Laura.

Nerida organised the workshop, coordinated on the day and
still managed to make a beautiful baby sized SuperStars quilt

Our latest SuperStars

The SuperStars keep coming ... finished tops, and now finished quilts too!

Lyn found adding just a few darker stars worked
well against her light background.

Pat chose a dramatic dark background for
her scrappy oriental stars.

Miriam's latest variation 

Miriam's feature fabrics are from a Halloween range
- the crow is her favourite.

Clare's gorgeous tropical version is beautifully finished
with the hot pink binding.

Dawn made two tiny baby quilts, a single star ...

... and a constellation of tiny stars.

SuperStars - finished quilt tops

You know that people have loved a workshop when you start seeing the finished quilt tops barely a week later. Our workshop with our very own Miriam Jones, learning how to make her  new 'SuperStars' design was barely a month ago, and fully subscribed, so there will be more of these beauties. You can see from these first finishes how versatile the pattern is, working well with all types of palettes and the range of sizes included in the pattern. More to come!

SuperStars workshop with SewMiriam

Last weekend we enjoyed a workshop with Miriam Jones, working on her new quilt design, 'Superstars'. The pattern provides instructions for several sizes from a cushion to a twin bed size, and is very versatile.  We are not posting construction photos because they are part of the pattern, and it will be published as a magazine project next year (more on that later). We will post photos of finished quilts as we see them.

Our thanks to Miriam for her excellent teaching, and to Nerida for organising the workshop and catering.

Getting started

Our venue is light, accessible and air-conditioned - every
comfort, so we can concentrate on the job at hand.

Pickled fishing on ...

Chris Jurd's Pickled Fish quilt, featured in a foundation piecing workshop in April, has several of us engaged in making our own versions. We are enjoying watching each others' progress, and fabric selections. It is a large quilt and will take us some time to complete - here is an indication of how some of us are going ...

Pat's latest Pickled Fish block - she has committed to sixteen blocks (the number in Chris Jurd's original design), and is well on the 
way. You can follow her progress on Instagram @patricianerlich

Jill has finished sixteen blocks, and is making the first
pieced border - a few more curved seams to go.

Daphne has also committed to sixteen blocks, and had completed
nine by last week - here are the four most recent. You can see
her progress on Instagram too @daphne47. While you are there,
check out Daphne's other works in progress - 6" red and white
blocks, and a quilt based on another of Chris Jurd's designs.

Trunk show with Chris Jurd

We booked a 'Pickled Fish' foundation piecing workshop with Chris Jurd in April, that we knew would be excellent and challenging, and were delighted to find on the day that we would have a bonus trunk show of some of Chris's other quilts! We loved her confident and bold use of colour, that compliments both the precision of foundation piecing and templates, and the abandon of improv piecing. Even the backs of the quilts were fabulous, and Chris's choices for border fabrics have us thinking.

Thanks for such a generous addition to our workshop Chris.
