Some finishes, and some works in progress ...

Jan could not resist this gorgeous fabric for a
dress for her little granddaughter - bet she
loves it too! It has a beautiful big flouncy
bow on the half belt that ties at the back.

A couple of weeks ago Daphne had finished all the blocks 

for this quilt (several years in the making), and was stuck 

for enough black fabric to put them together. All solved for 

a vibrant finish worth waiting for! 

Design by Chris Jurd, loads of foundation piecing for precision.

Miriam's latest (top) finish - snowballs with some tricky
matching of the corners to make the diamonds,
just requires careful layout before joining.

It all started wth the rhubarb  Rowan Collective fabric,
and the four Senoritas ...

Julie is carefully following Tamsin Harvey's fusible applique
pattern from her 2015 book 'Constantinople Quilts. This is the
first of eight repeats making a large circle.

We often see quilts that Yvette has quilted for others, so
it was a treat to see two of Yvette's own quilts recently.
First up, pastels for a baby.

Then, precision piecing! Yvette foundation pieced all the 

points in her striking geometic quilt. Those flying geese

 angles are more demanding than usual ...

 ... and quilted it with contrasting but gentle curves.

Fabric shops news

Quiltcon 2020 - award winners

Quiltcon is the annual exhibition of The Modern Quilt Guild, based in the US, but with an international membership. It is open this week, in Austin, Texas. You can see the award winners here.

Congratulations to the Best of Show winner Peter Byrne, from Toronto, Canada, and all the award winners. Especially Tara Glastonbury and Lorena Uriate, both from Sydney, who won first and third in the 'Stripe Challenge' category.

Show and tell - catch up

We've had a bit of a hiatus, having to cancel and move meetings last week when there were widespread power outages in our area (and for many members at home) - summer storms in Sydney! We hope we're back to normal operations now. Lot of individual quilt preparations going on for our April Quilt Show ...

Roslyn had a very clear image of her SuperStars quilt, with
its rich, dramatic pink background, and she has brought
it to life very well.

The reverse of Roslyn's quilt  ...

... and a detail of the clamshell quilting by Yvette
(Keepsake Quilting).

Noelle hand pieced her lovely version of 'Fire and Ice',
designed by Carol Roberts (Cherry Pie Designs). It was
machine quilted by @quilting finesse

Nerida brought her Anna Maria Horner 'Dear Diary' quilt in
for us to see it finished ...

... and the beautiful pieced backing from fabric she had stashed.

We basted Louise's pretty baby quilt, ready for hand quilting
and hanging in our quilt show in April, before being
delivered to baby Lily.

Nerida's 'Bessie Creek Road' BOM from Treehouse
Textiles is a finished top, and an absolute beauty.
That red gingham border!

The Flutterbies in Susan's version of Jen Kingwell's
design are subtle even though the colours are vibrant.

Linda's beginner's patchwork class wanted to learn
how to use a jelly roll - this is her class sample.

Elaine went travelling in Europe last year, making floral
hexagons along the way. The bees were made on her
embroidery machine at home - memories!

Robin's modern table runner
is very stylish.

Nerida is delighted with Yvette's quilting on her
 'Dear Diary' quilt, designed by Anna Maria Horner

Nerida has used fabric from several fabric ranges designed
by Anna Maria Horner, collected over several years.

Show and tell

Getting back into the swing of regular meetings, and a busy few months of preparation for our 2020 Quilt Show in April ...

Susan's Kaffe Fasset diamonds are a Mediterranean rainbow ...

... with a complimentary bright backing.

Julie made excellent use of a hexagon collection,
tamed before it went feral.

Elaine tried her hand at sashiko stitching to
enhance her Japanese inspired quilt.

Adrienne's SuperStars, quilted by Yvette - it was beautiful
as a pieced top, and just keeps getting better ...

... and Adrienne had just just the right fabrics for the backing.

Community quilts - January

Quite a few community quilt were finished and worked on over the summer break ...

Sue C's William Morris machine pieced hexagons.

Barbara a pretty toile from the community stash to
make this little quilt top

The backing and binding are also from the community stash.
Jill added the quilting.

Dawn made this squares and rectangles top with fabric from
the donated stash of a former member who can no longer sew.
We are making all of it into community quilts.

Some delightful vintage-style 'cheater' prints were found
in the donated stash, and Dawn has added borders.
Quilted by Laura in a vintage style apple/vine design.

Dawn combined two 'cheater' prints and a narrow border
in this one, also quilted by Laura.

All of these blocks are the same size - the design is simple,
but ingenous (Batiks in the Wild, by Suzy Meyers).
Jill used large scraps from her stash, starting with 10" squares.

Tokyo International Quilt Festival 2020

Three of our members are currently in Japan, with itineraries that include multi-day visits to the big quilt show, but they are much too excited to have organised all their photos, processed what they have seen so far, or to have written blog posts about them yet. Here are a just a few photos ...

January sewing day

Scheduling a sit-and-sew-day for January was a popular move, providing a good opportunity to catch up, and to work together after a six week break from regular meetings. We found plenty to do, working on our own projects and a number of community activities in preparation for our 2020 Quilt Show in April.

Louise volunteered to bind a community quilt

Hilary removed a lot of papers from a donated quilt
top that she is renovating.

Elaine likes to organised - her blocks are
numbered in neat stacks.

We finished off the 60 fabric flowers we have made for the
Fearless Flowers project, armed with felt, glue guns
and brooch pins.

Coffee, glue guns, glasses ... all set!

Some needed a little filling in their undersides ...

They'll make a colourful donation ...

... and help to promote awareness and funding for
ovarian cancer research and treatment.
